The American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers (ANSI Z136.1–2007) provides guidance for the safe use of lasers and laser systems that operate at wavelengths between 0.18 μm and 1 mm. This guide does not reproduce the detailed technical information on the measurements and calculations used to determine equipment hazard classification and the biological effects of laser use that appear in the ANSI Standard and its appendices due to copyright restrictions, though cross-references are provided. When preparing this guide, the authors have assumed that once a laser or laser system is classified into the appropriate hazard category, the operator does not need to complete any further measurements or calculations related to hazard classification in order to meet the provisions of this ANSI Standard.
