Workplace Violence Prevention: A Practical Guide

Stephen Doherty served thirty-three years in public law enforcement with three Boston area police departments before retiring to establish Doherty Partners, a private consulting firm specializing in workplace violence prevention.

He was Chief of Police in Wakefield, MA from 1991 through 2003. A workplace violence event resulting in seven fatalities in December 2000 spurred a community-policing partnership between the Wakefield Police and Northeastern University. The resulting Workplace Violence Pilot Program, funded by a $500,000 state grant, gathered data on workplace violence and involvement of local law enforcement.

Chief Doherty has provided workplace violence presentations for numerous groups including:

• Northeastern University, Boston, MA
• Boston-Babson College, Wellesley, MA
• FBI Academy, Quantico, VA
• American Society for Industrial Security, Los Angeles, CA
• International Association of Chiefs of Police, Toronto, Canada
• Employee Assistance Professionals Association, Weston, MA
• National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health

He is Past National President of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association.

Most recently, he has been a consultant to the Critical Incident Response Group at the National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime, FBI Academy, Quantico, VA, studying workplace violence.

Presently he is a program manager for the Public Safety Technology Center (www.ctc.org) in Westborough MA. The Center specializes in technology and training for first responders within the 21st century philosophy of homeland security.
