Fire Code Management of Hazardous Materials
The Essential Guide

Specialty Technical Consultants (STC)

Fire Code Management of Hazardous Materials: The Essential Guide covers the requirements from four nationally recognized Fire Prevention codes as they relate to the storage and handling of hazardous materials. The requirements focus on the types of hazard that a material presents (e.g., flammable, combustible, oxidizer corrosive, reactive, or toxic) rather than on individual hazardous chemicals or substances. They explicitly do not cover traditional fire protection issues: fire extinguishers, fire doors, etc.

Coverage also includes requirements for specific topics based on auditors’ experience as to which situations/sets of standards involve the most consistent risk (such as laboratories) and several topics related to specific industry sectors (such as in the semiconductor industry).

The following codes, and the respective editions covered, are as follows:

· National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 2000 ed.)
· NFPA, Uniform Fire Code™ (NFPA 1-UFC (2003 and 2006 ed.)
· International Fire Code (IFC, 2000, 2003, and 2006 ed.)
· Uniform Fire Code (UFC - 1997 and 2000 ed.)

A detailed State Fire Code Adoption Table identifies which fire codes have been adopted in each state. This Guide is available on
CD-ROM, and is updated annually.

Topics covered are:

· NFPA: Flammable and combustible liquids (storage, handling, piping systems, spray application, dipping operations), LPG; emergency and standby power systems; storage of liquid and solid oxidizers; fire protection during welding, cutting, and other hot work; manufacture and storage of aerosol products; protection of clean rooms; fire protection for laboratories; building construction; fire protection of marine terminals; combustible waste, refuse, or fibers; mechanical refrigeration; and aircraft fuel servicing.

· NFPA 1-UFC: Means of egress; safeguards during building construction, alteration, and demolition; combustible wastes and refuse; clean rooms; laboratories using chemicals; motor fuel dispensing facilities and repair garages; hot work operations; flammable or combustible materials; mechanical refrigeration; hazardous materials (general provisions); aerosol products; corrosive solids and liquids; flammable solids; toxic and highly toxic solids and liquids; LPG and LNG; unstable (reactive) solids and liquids; water-reactive solids and liquids; general fire safety; building services; and stationary lead-acid battery systems.

· IFC: Hazardous materials (general provisions); flammable and combustible liquids; semi-conductor fabrication facilities; compressed gases; corrosive materials; cryogenic fluids; flammable gases; toxic and highly toxic materials; LPG; oxidizers; pyrophoric materials, general precautions against fire, motor fuel dispensing, building services, and fire protection during welding and other hot work.

· UFC: Hazardous materials (general provisions); oxidizers; reactive and water-reactive materials; cryogenic materials; toxic and highly toxic materials; compressed gases; corrosives; carcinogens; irritants; sensitizers; radioactive materials; pyrophoric materials; organic peroxides; flammable solids and gases; flammable and combustible liquids; aboveground tanks, containers, and portable tanks; underground tank storage of flammable and combustible materials; semiconductor fabrication facilities; and motor vehicle fuel dispensing stations.
