1. Q.I get the error, "Some components needed to complete this operation are missing but information about them may be available on the Adobe website. Would you like to search the Adobe website for the missing components?". Why?

A. There is an instance of Adobe Reader or a web browser running in memory that is conflicting with the CD-ROM's Adobe Reader 4 security plug-in.

To solve the problem, please restart your computer and relaunch the CD-ROM. Alternatively, close all open browsers and Adobe reader windows, press the Ctrl - Alt - Delete keys at the same time to bring up the 'Windows Security' window. Select 'Task Manager' and click on the 'Process' tab. Click on the title 'Image Name' to sort the list alphabetically, right-click on 'Acrobat.exe' or 'AcroRd32.exe' and select 'End Process'. Close the 'Task Manager' window and view your publication again.

2. Q.I just received an updated CD and my desktop shortcut no longer works. What should I do?

A. Delete the old shortcut by right-clicking on the icon and selecting 'Delete'. Place your new CD-ROM in the drive, when the 'License Agreement' or 'STP - View a Publication' window appears, a new shortcut will be automatically placed on your desktop.

3. Q. I have Windows 2000, XP or Vista and I don't have Administrator rights. What do I do now?

A. Contact your network administrator to log onto your system and install the software for you. Once the installation is complete, the Administrator must copy the desktop shortcuts to a location accessible to the user (because the Administrator's desktop is not accessible to other users). The best place for the shortcuts is the desktop of the user that needs access to the publication.
(It is usually located at C:\Windows\Profiles\UserName\Desktop)

When the user first accesses the publication(s), he or she may be prompted for the publication code, which can be found on the back of the CD case.

If you have access to a Windows '95 or '98 machine, you will be able to install the publication(s) without an administrator.

4. Q. I have the CD in the CD-ROM drive, but when I double click the desktop shortcut, I get the following error message: "There was an error opening this document. The file does not exist." What do I do now?

A. The shortcuts to our publications on your desktop will not work if any version of Reader is currently running. (You will also get this message if the CD is not in the CD-ROM drive). Close Reader then double click the icon again; it will load Reader and open the publication for you. Please see question one for further information.

5. Q.I am using Windows XP and after successfully running the CD installation I cannot see the desktop shortcuts to the publication(s) I installed. How do I access my publication(s)?

A. By default, Windows XP hides desktop icons. To access your publication, you can use the Start Menu shortcut instead by clicking Start | All Programs | STP", then click on the publication you wish to view. If you would prefer to use the desktop icon, see your Windows XP documentation on how to show the desktop icons.

6. Q.I don't know where Reader is installed on my computer. How do I find out where it is installed?

A. Click on your Start button, then select Find | Files or Folders. Where it says Named, type in Acrobat.exe and click the Find Now button. It should show you the path where Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Reader is installed.

7. Q.I just got this CD-ROM from a coworker who left and I don't know the code. How can I get it?

A. You can give Customer Information Services a call at any of the phone numbers listed above. They will be happy to provide you with the code.

8. Q. We are not allowed to install any software on our corporate machines and I don't have Reader 8. What can I do now?

A. Call Customer Information Services and request a paper copy of the book to review.

9. Q. Online Customers: When I login to STP's online section, click on one of my publications, I can see the title page but when I click the bookmarks, an error message appears, "There was an error opening this document. The file cannot be found." How do I fix this problem?

A. Open your Adobe Reader, select Edit / Prefences / Internet. Where is says, 'Web Browser Options', uncheck 'Display PDF in Browser.' Close out of Adobe completely, then re-launch; open up the same section and recheck the 'Display PDF in Browser' setting. Close the Adobe Reader and log back into STP's online section.

You can download and print out the Installation and User Guide.

You can download Adobe Reader 8 for free from Adobe.
